General information on GEBSI activities
Graduate School for Electronic Business and Software Industry offers an
economical-technical doctoral program. The students are assisted
in writing their personal study plans and finding a suitable supervisor.
The plans are approved in HSE or HUT according to standard procedures.
The GEBSI students can utilize graduate course in both universities when
applicable. After completing most of the advanced and methodology
studies in regular HSE/HUT courses, GEBSI intensive courses and research
seminars during the first two years, the students will participate in
research projects with more senior researchers, working on the empirical
part of their dissertations. Furthermore, it is intended that each
doctoral student will participate annually at least in one academic
workshop, seminar or conference.
The most important mode of operation of GEBSI is to arrange joint workshops or research seminars for the GEBSI doctoral
students and supervisors and invited Finnish and international
researchers. Different research methods and views are emphasized, in
order to enrich the understanding of different researchers. Students in
both universities are encouraged to participate in doctoral research
seminars at the other school.
This mode of operation is aimed at speeding up the process of finishing
the dissertation by customizing the study plans based on personal
motivation and interests, and by creating a lasting supervisor-student
relationship. The idea of intensive courses is to invite international
top researchers to Finland, on the one hand in order to acquire the
latest knowledge, and on the other hand to promote international
contacts of the doctoral students. The latter is further supported by
participation to international academic conferences. The purpose of the
research seminars is to advance the research abilities of the students.
The role of research projects conducted in cooperation with companies is
central: doctoral students both learn from more senior researchers how
to organize and run a research project, and at the same time socializing
the students into the research community while working on relevant
research problems. Furthermore, by means of company collaboration, after
graduation the new doctors have a natural contact with companies.
