Objectives: This course is a doctoral level introduction to the topic of Household Finance
and it comprises both theoretical and empirical material and applications
covering recent developments in the field. The objective of the course is to
acquaint students with the recent academic research in Household Finance and at
the same time to prepare students to do research on their own in this new field.
Household finance focuses on the behaviour of households in terms of their
financial decisions and asks how households use financial instruments (and their
knowledge on financial markets in general) to attain their objectives. Household
financial problems have many interesting features that give the field its
special character. For example, households must plan over long horizons, they
have important non-traded assets, they hold illiquid assets, and they face
constraints on their ability to borrow, and so on. Importantly, it is also their
limited knowledge of financial instruments and financial markets in general that
may seriously affect/constrain their decisions over investment, consumption,
saving and so on. The more detailed description of the course will be provided
later on.
